Erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) refers to the inability to get and keep an erection firm enough for intercourse.

Having erection problems occasionally isn't necessarily a cause for concern. However, if erectile dysfunction becomes an ongoing issue, it can cause stress, affect one's self-confidence and lead to relationship issues. Problems keeping or getting an erection can also be a sign of an underlying health condition that needs treatment, and it can be a risk factor for heart disease.

When to see a urologist:

See if a urologist if you:

  • You experience our erections, or you are experiencing other sexual problems such as delayed or premature or ejaculation
  • You have heart disease, diabetes, heart disease or another health condition along with erectile dysfunction symptoms

Treatments

Treatments for ED will depend on the underlying cause. Dr Pluke may recommend a combination of treatments, including medication or talk therapy. He may also recommend Testosterone Therapy if you have low levels of testosterone.

Medications

Dr Pluke may require you to try several medications before you find one that works. The following oral medications are commonly used to stimulate blood flow to your penis and help treat ED:

  • Avanafil (Stendra)
  • Sildenafil (Viagra)
  • Tadalafil (Cialis)
  • Vardenafil (Levitra, Staxyn)

Vacuum pumps

This treatment involves creating a vacuum to stimulate an erection. During the procedure, blood is drawn into the penis as the device is used, leading to an erection. An elastic ring functions to maintain the erection, holding the blood in the penis and preventing it from returning to circulation. The vacuum device can be left in place for 30 minutes.
